Designing your Kitchen: Start with the basic home kitchen stations

When remodeling your home kitchen, start by considering how you’ll be using the following areas:

Cooking

When designing a cooking area you need to consider not only where you’ll be preparing and cooking food, but also how to dispose of garbage efficiently.

Starting with the prep-area, you’ll want to make sure it offers enough space depending on the size of the meals you intend to cook. You’ll also want to make sure the area is easy to clean and hygienic.

The stove is part of this area as it will be the appliance doing most of the cooking. It is a good idea to keep it as few steps away as possible from the prep-area. This way you can just chop, scoop, and dump into a pot all without taking unnecessary steps.

Preparing food generates garbage. But you don’t want to be walking back and forth between the garbage bin and your cooking area. Integrating a garbage bin in this area will greatly increase your efficiency.

Cleaning

Your cleaning area should be located near your sink and following closely, the dishwasher.

Instead of leaving all the cleaning to the end, you’ll want to clean while you wait for things to cook, so you’ll want the cleaning area to be close to the cooking area so you can keep an eye out for what is cooking while you do some cleaning.

Food storage

When it come to this area, most of the design effort goes to using space efficiently and less about how far from the cooking and cleaning areas it is.

The main protagonists of this area are the refrigerator and pantry, and they take a significant amount of space.

Depending on the size of your kitchen, this area will usually take away space from the Cooking and Cleaning areas of the kitchen.

An experienced kitchen designer will help you determine how much space to allocate for each area.
